June is for vacations, weddings and celebrating Homeownership Month! And celebrate we will, with three events in Petersburg supporting home buying, homeowners, and housing production.
Virginia Homeownership Program Lunch & Learn | June 7
This event will focus on making homebuying accessible, featuring speakers and organizations discussing grants and other assistance programs available to those who help connect residents to affordable housing in the area. The morning sessions will feature Virginia Housing’s First Time Homebuyer Loans, the SPARC Program, and Closing Cost Grants available to qualified buyers. During lunch, Jonathan Adkins, a Housing Program Manager with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), will discuss the WORTH (Wealth Opportunities Restored through Homeownership) program, an initiative funded by Wells Fargo to advance racial equity in homeownership. In the afternoon, speakers will explore state home renovation and affordability programs such as Acquire, Renovate, Sell (ARS), Down Payment Assistance (DPA), Virginia Individual Development Accounts (VIDA), and Lead Hazard Reduction. The final session will be co-led by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and Virginia Housing, reviewing opportunities and examples of how to layer all these programs for clients.

Petersburg Housing Developer Summit | June 21
With this event, the focus shifts from homebuying and homebuyers to developers and housing production. The Housing Developer Summit will include speakers covering local (City of Petersburg and Cameron Foundation) and state incentives (Virginia Housing, VCDC, and DHCD), resources for construction and rehabilitation, as well as two local case studies on projects that have utilized a number of these resources. Additionally, the Hopewell Downtown Partnership (HDP) will highlight the work that they have done to develop small-scale, locally-based real estate developers, and area major employers will share information on their future hiring plans. And, for the looky-loos, multiple properties showcasing housing and housing opportunities in Petersburg will be open for tours during a long lunch break that sends attendees out into the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

Petersburg Home Buyers Fair
During the evening of June 28th, the City of Petersburg will host a Home Buyers Fair that will introduce aspiring homeowners to the resources that can help them achieve their dream. Realtors, housing nonprofits, and financial institutions will be available to discuss housing opportunities, down payment assistance, and credit repair.
