A Welcome Space in Luray

One of the true pleasures of working on Main Streets is witnessing the transformation of ideas into realities that seamlessly integrate into the fabric of a community. During my recent visit to Luray, I was met with the sight of Creekside Commons, a captivating gateway pocket park that came to life thanks to the support of a Virginia Main Street (VMS) Downtown Investment Grant (DIG) just a few years ago. These grants provide essential funding for catalytic projects that actively and sustainably advance an organization’s goals and strategies in creative ways.

For several years, members of the community had engaged in discussions regarding the fate of a vacant car lot situated near a prominent downtown entrance. Their aim was to breathe new life into this space, envisioning a project that would not only enhance the visual appeal of the downtown area but also provide additional parking options. As the project took shape, the team identified a pressing need for an ADA parking spot and an EV charging station.

Strategically positioned at a pivotal entrance to the community, Creekside Commons occupies a significant location along the river, directly across from Luray’s beloved Hawksbill Greenway. In perfect harmony with the adjacent “Welcome to Luray” sign, the park boasts meticulously maintained landscaping, inviting benches, and charming planters, as well as those specifically needed parking spots that provide more accessibility to downtown.

Creekside Commons is a great example of a successful DIG project as the park is now a visual cue to the beauty and assets Luray has to offer and a wonderful way to greet visitors and residents to the downtown district.
