Every year, the first full week of August (8/6 – 8/12) is recognized as National Farmers Market Week! It’s a time where local farmers and others are provided with a special opportunity to market the goods they grow and/or make, as well as a chance to highlight the vital role farmers markets play in fostering local economic growth and enriching the community.
Apart from offering an opportunity to support local farmers and purchase fresh, locally grown produce, farmers markets positively impact local communities and businesses in numerous ways:
Increased Foot Traffic
- Farmers markets attract a diverse crowd of shoppers, leading to increased foot traffic in your downtown or neighborhood commercial district, which can benefit nearby merchants.
Boosting Local Economy
- The presence of farmers markets encourages people to spend money locally, supporting not only the farmers but also other businesses on Main Street. This economic boost can lead to job creation and further investment in the area.
Fostering Community Engagement
- Farmers markets serve as community gathering spots, fostering a sense of connection and belonging. This can strengthen the community fabric and encourage people to be more engaged in local activities.
Educational Opportunities
- Farmers markets often host workshops, cooking demonstrations and educational events. These activities can promote awareness of local agriculture, sustainable practices, and healthy eating habits.
Showcasing Local Talent and Crafts
- Some farmers markets also feature artisans, crafters and food vendors. By providing a platform for local talent, these markets can promote the creative arts and support small entrepreneurs.

The Virginia Farmers Market Association (VAFMA) encourages everyone to celebrate this week by visiting a market near them or near to where they are traveling and posting about their adventure on social media platforms. The VAFMA will be sharing posts and photos from market visits around the state!
