Through Virginia Main Street’s (VMS) Firm Principles, Flexible Paths series, the Center of Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) is diving into their 7 Actionable Principles (7APs) to strengthen nonprofits and their relationships with funders. The 7APs offer a common language around key and proven practices, infused with values of equity and growth. The fifth principle relates to developing leaders.
Actionable items include:
- We demonstrate our commitment to effective stewardship of our staff and board by ensuring representation of and leadership by those served. Leaders throughout our organization understand the unique business model of the organization, meaning how money is raised and spent to fulfill the mission and strategic goals, and make sure that promised results are achieved;
- We offer competitive staff compensation and benefits and provide systems and infrastructure that staff need to do the work; and
- We invest in staff and board development, mentoring, and support, and we intentionally plan for leadership succession to ensure staff and board growth and continuity.
“Board members play very significant roles in providing guidance to nonprofits by contributing to the organization’s culture, strategic focus, effectiveness, and financial sustainability, as well as serving as ambassadors and advocates.”

Bringing It Back to Main Street
Main Street organizations can enhance the development of board members by implementing targeted strategies for effective governance and guidance, including but not limited to:
- Establishing a structured onboarding process that familiarizes board members with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic goals;
- Offering training sessions on governance best practices, ethical decision-making, and financial literacy equips board members with the necessary skills to fulfill their roles responsibly;
- Facilitating regular communication channels, such as workshops or seminars, allows board members to stay informed about industry trends and challenges; and
- Encouraging a culture of collaboration and mutual respect within the board that further strengthens their ability to work cohesively in providing strategic guidance for the success of the organization.
By emphasizing ongoing education and providing resources for continuous learning and growth, Main Street organizations can cultivate dynamic and well-prepared leaders capable of steering the organization towards sustainable success!
At CNE, our vision is equitable, thriving, and just communities powered by healthy nonprofits, and our mission is to be a champion, learning partner, and advisor for Virginia nonprofits.
