May is #PreservationMonth! The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) began celebrating and promoting the value of historic preservation back in 1973 with Preservation Week, which then extended into an entire Preservation Month in 2005. Preservation Month is meant to bring attention to historic places and heritage tourism, as well as promote both the economic and social benefits of historic preservation across the country.
The theme for this year highlights all the people doing the work of saving places, both big and small. ‘People Saving Places’ encourages us to celebrate and recognize the people that put their resources, time, and energy into saving the places we care about and inspire others to join the effort.
Get in on the action! The NTHP has supplied free marketing tools for you to promote the historic preservation work your own community and organization does this month, including graphics, online stickers, and social media samples. You can use these tools to highlight the work you’ve done and the people behind the effort. You can tag NTHP in social media posts @SavingPlaces and join the NTHP LinkedIn Group to share how you’re celebrating Preservation Month.
How are you going to celebrate the people doing the work of #SavingPlaces? Email mainstreet@dhcd.virginia.gov to let us know if you’ve got a great story to tell!
