Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. (CRI) proudly unveiled five new murals in downtown through their Art in Public Spaces Power Box Mural Program. Featuring the unique work of local artists, the murals beautify utility boxes and create a more inviting atmosphere for locals and visitors. The murals reflect the regions natural beauty and local heritage – depicting local vistas, wildlife, and points of interest.
CRI solicited artwork from 2-D artists including graphic designers, illustrators, painters and photographers within 50 miles of town using a public Request for Proposal (RFP) process. The organization’s Design Committee narrowed down eight submissions to the final five, which were then presented to Culpeper’s Architectural Review Board for approval.
“These murals make a positive impact to the look and feel of downtown. The murals change formerly plain metal boxes into powerful graphical images. Each mural was completed by a different local artist and brings a bright image showcasing Culpeper downtown.” – Glen Hoffherr, CRI Board President

Mural locations were carefully selected to draw pedestrians off the beaten path from Davis Street and create a more connected downtown. Various partners, including the Town of Culpeper‘s Light and Power Department, Planning and Community Development Department and the Architectural Review Board contributed to this project, which was funded through CRI fundraising efforts.
Culpeper’s Art in Public Spaces Power Box Mural Program further strengthens their distinctive downtown atmosphere, serves as a tourist attraction and promotes commerce. To learn more about each mural – including artist, title and location – check out the CRI mural map.
