In the heart of every vibrant downtown lies an essential yet sometimes overlooked element: the streetscape. Streetscape improvements, which can include enhancements to sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, signage, and more, play an important role in the overall design and experience of your Main Street district. People are more likely to stroll through a clean, well-maintained area where they feel comfortable and welcomed.
With the support of a $15,000 Community Vitality Grant (CVG) from the Virginia Main Street (VMS) program, Gate City Frontier (GCF) was able to achieve success on a simple project that had big impacts: improving the downtown streetscape and making it safer and more enjoyable to walk around and explore for residents and visitors alike. The organization’s #GateCityProud project resulted in 30 new trash cans and 30 new street planters in the Main Street district, replacing the dilapidated and well-worn fixtures that had been in place before.
“We are thankful that through this project, we have created a more livable and sustainable environment for all stakeholders in the Gate City community, as well as a more welcoming downtown commercial district that will be inviting to tourists. The beautification efforts of this project have launched us right into the next phase, which will begin in the Spring with warmer temperatures. This project has shown our organization that relentless incremental changes are necessary for the revitalization of our town, and we are willing to put in the work!” – Gate City Frontier
Beyond just improving the function and appearance of the downtown streetscape, this project has helped bolster community pride in Gate City and encouraged the community to do a second phase of the project. By focusing on the basics—such as clean streets, functional amenities, and an attractive streetscape—GCF is fostering a downtown that benefits all stakeholders.
