The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) has officially designated Colonial Beach as an Advancing Virginia Main Street (AVMS) community, joining eight other distinguished communities in the Commonwealth. This recognition celebrates Colonial Beach’s vibrant economy, rich history, and strong community partnerships, driven by the nonprofit Downtown Colonial Beach (DCB).
Situated along the Potomac River, Colonial Beach has a storied past as a cherished riverside resort town. Its natural beauty and thriving arts and culture scene have long attracted visitors seeking both relaxation and entertainment. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, entrepreneurial steamboat owners transformed the area from farmland into a bustling tourist hub. Over time, the town transitioned into a quiet residential community, with Hurricane Isabel in 2003 spurring reinvestment that revitalized its charm.
During the 2023-2024 Mobilizing Main Street program, DCB spearheaded downtown revitalization efforts, fostering collaboration with local leaders and community stakeholders to establish a unified economic vision. The organization strengthened ties with small businesses, organized festivals and markets to draw visitors, and partnered with the town government to enhance public spaces with landscaping and historic signage. DCB also managed the Sip ‘N’ Stroll Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) program. Additionally, it advanced plans for a multimodal transportation connectivity initiative to improve access and mobility.
As an AVMS community, Colonial Beach is set for even greater growth. Future plans include promoting the town as a year-round destination, supporting businesses with training and resources, and creating pedestrian-friendly streetscapes. By bridging seasonal economic gaps, expanding marketing efforts, and bolstering water-oriented enterprises, DCB aims to establish a thriving year-round economy.
This designation underscores Colonial Beach’s remarkable potential and the strength of community collaboration. Congratulations, Colonial Beach!
