In 2024, Virginia Main Street (VMS) collaborated with Main Street communities across the Commonwealth to implement the Main Street Approach, driving positive and catalytic impacts. Through strategic initiatives and dedicated local leadership, these communities, with their emerging and established Main Street programs, have successfully attracted new businesses, fostered meaningful community engagement, and strengthened their local economies. Below are 2024 reinvestment statistics, reflecting the collective impact of these efforts:

Since the program’s inception in 1985, 8,624 businesses have opened / expanded, 28,451 jobs have been created, and over $2.8 billion in public and private investment has been generated. Local Main Street programs have also contributed 1,472,275 volunteer hours, which has a market value of $49,306,478.

Beyond fostering economic outcomes, the VMS team provided an extensive range of training, services, and technical assistance throughout the past year. Through virtual sessions and in-person engagements, these efforts equipped local Main Street programs with the tools and knowledge needed to implement effective revitalization strategies. Additionally, VMS awarded more than $1.4 million in grant funding to support impactful projects that have enhanced downtown districts, preserved historic assets, and more!
A significant focus was placed on providing specialized support to guide communities in developing downtown master plans, fund development strategies, and other key planning initiatives that lay the groundwork for sustainable growth. VMS staff frequently conducted site visits, facilitated program assessments, and offered tailored guidance to ensure local Main Street programs were equipped to strengthen their capacity, enhance organizational sustainability, and advance their revitalization goals.

By leveraging the resources, guidance, and technical support provided by the VMS program, these communities are equipped to navigate the complexities of revitalization with confidence and strategic foresight. Through thoughtful planning, stakeholder engagement, and a commitment to preserving their unique heritage, they are successfully strengthening local economies, enhancing quality of life, and positioning their districts as vibrant destinations for both residents and visitors alike.
