May is Preservation Month! Led by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Month celebrates the cultural and built heritage of communities across the country. It’s a time to recognize and celebrate the places, stories, and individuals that have shaped the character of Virginia’s historic downtowns.
Main Street programs across the Commonwealth continue to champion historic preservation as a catalyst for economic development and downtown revitalization. Through design assistance, façade improvement grants, feasibility studies, the strategic use of historic tax credits, and more, these programs are helping property owners bring new life to historic structures. The result is a vibrant community where small businesses thrive in spaces that retain their community’s unique historic character.
Preservation Month also highlights the importance of collaboration to accomplish goals. The success of downtown revitalization depends on strong partnerships among local governments, business leaders, property owners, preservation professionals, and engaged community members.
This May, we encourage residents and visitors alike to celebrate and engage with the historic assets of their local Main Street communities by:
- Take a walking tour and observe the architectural features that define your downtown.
- Support local businesses located in rehabilitated historic buildings.
- Attend a preservation-related event or enjoy a performance at the local historic theater.
- Share your favorite memories, photos, or stories from your local Main Street on social media using the hashtag #PreservationMonth
