St. Paul Tomorrow recently completed an exciting public art project that was made possible through a FY24 Virginia Main Street Downtown Investment Grant. This initiative brought to life a dynamic piece of gateway art that now serves as a bold, beautiful welcome into the heart of downtown St. Paul.
The project created a large-scale mural installed on the retaining walls beside the railroad trestle that runs adjacent to the downtown district. Designed to highlight the community’s natural and cultural heritage, the mural vividly depicts the Clinch River, one of the most biodiverse river systems in North America, and it is surrounded by native trees, wildflowers, and local wildlife. In addition to celebrating the area’s ecological richness, the artwork also incorporates elements of St. Paul’s history, weaving in stories of the town’s past and its connection to the land and rail.

This project exemplifies how public art can elevate and reinforce a community’s unique assets. By placing this mural at a key entry point, the town has not only enhanced its visual identity but also deepened the connection between residents, visitors, and the surrounding landscape. It turns what was once a utilitarian space into a vibrant landmark that sparks curiosity and pride.

The impact has been immediate. The gateway art has transformed the first impression of downtown St. Paul—welcoming both longtime residents and newcomers with a visual narrative that reflects the town’s distinct sense of place. It’s a powerful reminder of how even small-scale investments, when rooted in community identity, can make a lasting difference in revitalization efforts and community pride.
“We’re very proud of these murals that have added to the beauty and character of downtown St. Paul. The DIG award along with local funding made them possible. Andrew Williams is the great artist who was able to recreate our vision for the space.”
