Public art has a special way of telling a community’s story—and in Onancock, that story just became even more vibrant. Thanks to a powerful mix of leveraged private investment and support from a Virginia Main Street Downtown Investment Grant, Onancock Main Street (OMS) brought Project Uplift to life, adding three new public art pieces to the heart of downtown. Completed in the summer of 2025, these installations expanded Onancock’s outdoor gallery to a total of seven works, sparking fresh energy, pride, and curiosity throughout the town.
At its core, Project Uplift was about celebrating local identity, supporting artists, and creating moments of beauty that invite people to stop, explore, and stay awhile. OMS embraced an appreciative mindset by asking: “What makes Onancock special—and how can public art help amplify it?” The answers took shape in three extraordinary pieces.
The first, “A Vibrant Tapestry,” emerged from a public call for artists back in February 2025. After a competitive review process, Chicago-based artists Michael Ferrarell and Nick Capozzoli of Anytown Mural and Sign Co. were selected. Their mural honors the generations that built Onancock—past and present—capturing the town’s spirit through storytelling and color. It now stands proudly along the corridor into downtown, welcoming everyone with a sense of history and heart.
Next came “Onancock Greetings,” a nostalgic postcard-style mural created by longtime Richmond artist Matt Lively. Featuring beloved landmarks and community moments, this mural instantly became a favorite photo spot. In a lovely gesture of community support, an OMS committee member donated free lodging for visiting artists—showing how deeply residents believe in the project’s impact.
The final piece, the “Creek View” mosaic, was handcrafted by New Ravenna, a renowned local tile company. This 250-pound glass artwork, depicting Onancock Creek with its wildlife and natural beauty, was professionally installed to ensure it remains a lasting treasure.
The results have been powerful. The new art has increased foot traffic, sparked social media buzz, boosted shopping and dining, and strengthened community pride. Over the past five years, OMS has completed five murals—each one shaping a downtown that feels welcoming, artistic, and authentically Onancock.
