A Season for Giving and Gaining: Collectable Ornaments Strengthen Fredericksburg’s Downtown

Fredericksburg Main Street (FMS) launched its first-ever commemorative ornament this past holiday season, creating a new fundraising tool and strengthening community connection to the historic downtown district.

The 2025 ornament featured Goolrick’s Pharmacy, a long-standing downtown business and local landmark that has served the community since 1897. The highly recognizable and meaningful site resulted in an ornament that functions as both a keepsake and a visible expression of support for downtown. They were quickly sold out, and FMS ended up doubling their initial production run of 500 ornaments to meet demand.

“Goolrick’s Pharmacy holds decades of memories for Fredericksburg, and this ornament allowed people to take a small piece of that history home with them. It became a symbol of pride, nostalgia, and continued investment in our downtown’s future,” said Chris Allen, executive director of Fredericksburg Main Street.

The Goolrick’s Pharmacy ornament is the first in what will be an annual collectible series featuring Fredericksburg’s historic downtown landmarks. Each ornament costs $15 and is sold at $30, offering the organization an even higher return on investment. Proceeds help FMS further their mission and directly support downtown businesses, events, beautification initiatives, and preservation efforts.

Fredericksburg’s ornament program is a practical, replicable example for other Virginia Main Street communities seeking creative ways to diversify revenue, strengthen local engagement, and celebrate the unique assets that define their downtowns.

We look forward to seeing which one of the many historical downtown Fredericksburg buildings/businesses is featured next year!
