2012 Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Awards

Altavista Special Achievement Award Presentation
Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng presents Altavista on Track Board President William Smith with a Special Achievement Award for the Altavista Arts and Antiques business incubator.

Congratulations to the 14 designated Virginia Main Street communities that received Milestone Achievement Awards at this year’s annual luncheon. The luncheon, attended by nearly 100 members of the Virginia Main Street community, was hosted by DHCD Director Bill Shelton. Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng applauded the hard work and accomplishments of the Virginia Main Street community and presented award certificates to community and organization representatives.

In his talk entitled, “New Localism,” the luncheon’s keynote speaker, National Trust Main Street Center Director Doug Loescher, suggested that Main Street communities could benefit by joining the local investing or “locavesting” movement, which encourages people to invest money in their own communities.

Altavista on Track, Main Street Radford, Downtown Franklin Association, Historic Manassas, Inc., Staunton Downtown Development Association, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance and Lynch’s Landing Foundation were recognized for reaching milestones in the number of volunteer hours contributed to downtown revitalization. Between 2007-2011, Virginia Main Street volunteers across the state contributed more than 345,000 volunteer hours, which equates to nearly $6.9 million in private support for downtown revitalization.

Private investment milestone certificates were presented to Bedford, Martinsville, Harrisonburg, Manassas, Lynchburg, Winchester, Rocky Mount, Orange, South Boston and Culpeper. In the last five years, designated Main Street communities have sparked more than $236 million in private investment in their districts, which in 2011 alone led to the creation of 826 jobs.

A special achievement award was presented to Altavista on Track for the organization’s Altavista Arts and Antiques, a unique art and business incubator located in the heart of the town’s Main Street district and is operated by Altavista On Track.

Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients. Keep up the great work!
