In early 2023, Destination Downtown South Boston (DDSB) adopted a new Transformation Strategy, centering on South Boston’s agricultural economy, to help guide the local Main Street organization’s work. A primary objective is to elevate the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market to new heights, and substantial efforts were dedicated to enhancing engagement, expanding activities, and bolstering marketing initiatives. These endeavors have yielded tangible results, manifesting in heightened vendor and customer interest.
Hiring a Market Manager
At the beginning of the year, DDSB welcomed Melissa Nelson as the new part-time Market Manager, infusing the market with fresh vigor and enthusiasm. With a focus on effective management and sustainable expansion, she is generating innovative ideas to propel the market forward. Melissa’s primary objective is to foster the market’s growth by introducing an array of family-oriented events and cultivating relationships with vendors essential to its operations.
Hailing from a lineage of farmers spanning four generations, Melissa is a wealth of agricultural expertise. As the proprietor of her farm in Buffalo Junction, Virginia, she leverages her generational wisdom to cultivate exceptional produce and nurture a diverse array of farm animals. Her commitment to her craft resonates deeply within South Boston, enriching the community’s vision for sustainable agricultural practices and DDSB community engagement efforts.
Promotion, Outreach and Key Initiatives
With support from Melissa and other volunteers, considerable organizational efforts were dedicated to enhancing the market’s online presence and communication channels. A new website was crafted, complemented by a strategic escalation of social media engagement overseen by DDSB’s volunteer marketing consultant. Vendor communication was streamlined through the establishment of a dedicated Facebook Group, and a vendor newsletter is now being distributed via MailChimp.
A robust calendar of events will enrich the market experience. Notable initiatives include, but are not limited to: collaborative ventures with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to promote childhood literacy, special Mother’s Day activities (Flowerpots for Mom) and Wednesdays at the Market, which has expanded market hours and welcomed food trucks and live music for all to enjoy!

In addition, obtaining a $15,000 Sentara Cares Grant from Sentara Health has helped the market to support and expand programs in three key areas:
The Power of Produce (POP) Program
The PoP Program serves as a dynamic initiative aimed at fostering healthier eating habits among children while imparting valuable knowledge about food origins and cultivation practices. The program has extended its reach beyond the market, employing printed materials and school presentations to engage with local youth. By incentivizing participation in educational activities and conducting targeted outreach to families, the program seeks to cultivate a generation of informed consumers.
Recognizing that nurturing a connection between children and nutritious food sources is paramount, the PoP Club allows children (ages two-18) to receive $5 vouchers that they can use to purchase fresh produce and other healthy items at the market. Kids receive vouchers each time they participate in a PoP event at the market, and they also become eligible to receive prizes and giveaways throughout the year.
The PoP Club has become a bonding experience for many families, with parents routinely bringing their children back to the market to enjoy the benefits and fun of being a PoP member. In fact, the number of children engaged in the PoP Program increased by 366% from 225 in 2022 to 1,049 in 2023.
Grow-It-Yourself (GIY) Program
The GIY Program promotes self-sufficiency in food production. Both market administration and vendors are empowered to educate the community on agricultural practices, emphasizing the cultivation of locally relevant crops. Educational efforts extend to instructing individuals on cultivating their own food on a smaller scale, utilizing methods such as raised gardens or other compact grow-it-yourself solutions. This practical guidance equips community members with the knowledge and skills necessary to replicate food production in their own environments. Additionally, the market facilitates access to free and/or affordable garden plants, ensuring that individuals have the resources needed to embark on their gardening endeavors with confidence.

In an effort to foster sustained engagement and patronage among customers, market loyalty cards were introduced as a means of incentivizing regular visits. Through this initiative, patrons are encouraged to prioritize the purchase of local produce and plants / flowers, earning rewards as they accumulate stamps on their loyalty cards. Upon completion, these cards can be redeemed for a variety of enticing giveaways and perks, including plants and seeds tailored to GIY endeavors, as well as curated gift baskets and other desirable items. This strategic approach not only promotes repeat customers but also enhances community involvement and investment in local agricultural enterprises.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market is committed to promoting healthier eating habits and lifestyles among SNAP recipients through a combination of unique incentives and educational initiatives. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Increased promotion of Virginia Fresh Match program through social media and print advertising
- Established a dedicated webpage for SNAP benefits, featuring downloadable resources such as brochures aimed at educating visitors on maximizing their benefits
- Collaborated with local social services representative(s) to determine opportunities to cross-promote SNAP benefits and advantages of using them at the market for healthy foods
- Upgraded market technology to accept SNAP payments
- Encouraged healthy purchases at the market by offering double benefits for SNAP recipients – spend $10 and get $20 worth of produce
- Held blood pressure screening to promote healthy living
This comprehensive approach underscores the market’s dedication to fostering a culture of wellness and informed consumer choices within the community.
Gold Level Certification
Adding to its many successes over the past year, the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market has been awarded Gold Level certification by the Virginia Farmers Market Association (VAFMA). This prestigious recognition, under the newly launched Virginia Certified Farmers Market Program, underscores the market’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of excellence in serving the community.
Congratulations, and well deserved!
