In January, Virginia Main Street (VMS) published the Creating Interactive Apptivities blog post, highlighting the importance of keeping people engaged with places throughout the pandemic. VMS spotlighted Danville’s River District Association (RDA) for their efforts to create socially distant activities through guided smartphone-based apptivities via Distrx. Excitingly, RDA has announced that their fun mobile apptivities will launch on March 6th, but the public can download the downtown app today and explore the River District’s new digital visitors guide, learning more about small businesses, promotions, events and more!
Free, family-friendly recreational opportunities that accommodate social distancing protocols are having a moment. Acknowledging this fact, RDA recognized Distrx, a location-aware mobile app designed specifically for Main Street communities, as a means to create fun apptivities and informative walking tours. The local Main Street organization has been working with local partners to finalize a series of walking tours, such as an Art and Sculpture Tour, and a scavenger hunt apptivity for the community, named “You Otter be in the River District.”
“Printed visitors guides are expensive to produce and become outdated almost immediately, and we wanted to find a fresh new way to communicate all there is to do and see in the River District in a fun and accessible format. Distrx allows us to provide fun apptivities and walking tours to highlight our rich culture and history while addressing practical needs for anyone coming downtown.” – Diana Schwartz, Executive Director, RDA

Scavenger hunt participants will follow clues or answer riddles to find all the stops, and those that complete the scavenger hunt will be entered to win Danville-themed prizes!
