Downtown Onancock is buzzing with fresh energy, and it’s no accident. The Feel the Vibe project, partially funded by a $45,000 Virginia Main Street (VMS) Downtown Investment Grant, brought together a creative mix of initiatives to attract more people downtown, support entrepreneurs, and enhance the district’s visual appeal. Onancock Main Street (OMS) led the effort, turning strategic goals into action and delivering real results for the community.
The project blended multiple elements into one coordinated push for economic vitality. A series of small business workshops and Main Street Mixers connected local entrepreneurs with marketing tools, management strategies, and new partnerships. These gatherings also welcomed business owners from nearby towns, creating a broader regional network of support.
One of the most visible achievements was OMS’ third mural project at The North Street Playhouse, a montage of Onancock’s legacy of theater and performing arts. The bold, colorful artwork, paired with protective landscaping, lighting, and directional signage, became an instant landmark. The mural’s unveiling drew coverage from the Eastern Shore Post and even a feature on Hampton Roads’ WTKR TV, putting Onancock’s creativity in the regional spotlight.

Vacant storefronts also received attention through window banners that masked empty spaces while promoting the district’s potential. With messages like “Empty Building – Full of Opportunities,” they generated curiosity and optimism about future business openings.

The Onancock Main Street Gift Card program, launched on the Yiftee platform, added another boost by making it easy for residents and visitors to shop locally. Seasonal marketing campaigns, including a Valentine’s promotion, encouraged year-round shopping and strengthened community connections.
Partnerships made all of this possible. OMS worked with the Town of Onancock, Eastern Shore Community College’s Workforce Development Center, Eastern Shore Virginia Tourism, the Eastern Shore Historic Society, Artisan Build of the Eastern Shore, and the Eastern Shore Art League. The Town of Onancock provided the $12,500 required match, and OMS volunteers contributed an impressive 543 hours of labor and expertise, valued at more than $18,000 — from installing banners and lighting to mentoring business owners and organizing community events.
The outcomes are clear: 210 existing jobs retained, 23 businesses assisted, and one major facade improvement that now draws visitors daily. By bringing together the Main Street Approach’s four points — Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization — OMS has ensured that Onancock isn’t just “feeling the vibe,” it’s living it.
