Great downtowns don’t happen by accident. They are built through vision, partnership, persistence, and a community willing to invest in its future. This week, Downtown Colonial Beach and the Town of Colonial Beach were recognized for exactly that kind of leadership.
The Virginia Main Street program is proud to congratulate Downtown Colonial Beach and the Town of Colonial Beach on receiving the 2026 Holzheimer Award for Economic Development from the American Planning Association Virginia Chapter for their Downtown Connectivity Plan.
This prestigious statewide award recognizes planning efforts that create meaningful economic impact, and Colonial Beach’s plan does just that. By connecting transportation, placemaking, redevelopment, and economic development into a single implementation-focused strategy, the community has created a roadmap for a downtown that is more walkable, welcoming, connected, and economically resilient. From improved pedestrian experiences and golf cart connectivity to enhanced wayfinding and redevelopment opportunities, the plan is designed to help residents, businesses, and visitors experience everything that makes Colonial Beach unique.
For the Virginia Main Street team, this recognition is especially meaningful because it represents another milestone in a remarkable journey. Through the Mobilizing Main Street program, Colonial Beach embraced the Main Street Approach®, strengthened its organization, engaged local partners, and built a shared vision for downtown revitalization. Those efforts led to the community’s designation as an Advancing Virginia Main Street community in 2025—reflecting both the progress already achieved and the exciting opportunities ahead.
The award-winning Downtown Connectivity Plan was funded through a Virginia Main Street FY25 Small Area Plan (SMARP) Grant and completed in December 2025. Developed by Timmons Group, the plan demonstrates the power of thoughtful planning paired with strong local leadership. More importantly, it provides a practical blueprint for turning ideas into action and investments into lasting community impact.
Awards like this recognize more than an outstanding plan—they celebrate the people who made it possible.
