The first thing visitors notice when they arrive in downtown Clarksville is its character.
Historic storefronts, welcoming sidewalks, locally owned businesses, and views of nearby Kerr Lake create an experience that invites people to slow down, explore, and stay awhile. While that charm may seem effortless, it is the result of intentional investment and strong local partnerships working together to preserve and strengthen Virginia’s only lakeside town.
With support from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development‘s Virginia Main Street program, the Town of Clarksville invested $145,000 in Virginia Business District Resurgence Grant (VBDRG) funding to administer a local matching façade improvement program within the downtown district. Working in partnership with Historic Downtown Clarksville (HDC), the initiative resulted in 18 façade improvement projects benefiting 21 businesses.
The Town further demonstrated its commitment by contributing $27,914 in local public funding, while participating property or business owners invested $147,876 of their own resources. Together, these investments transformed commercial buildings throughout downtown, improving storefronts, preserving historic character, and creating a stronger sense of place for residents, business owners, and visitors alike.

Façade improvements are about far more than fresh paint, repaired masonry, or restored architectural details. Attractive storefronts encourage private investment, build confidence among property owners, and help create an environment where businesses are more likely to locate, expand, and succeed. Every improved building contributes to a more inviting downtown experience, reinforcing the value of investing in historic commercial districts.

For communities like Clarksville, where tourism plays a significant role in the local economy, these improvements are especially meaningful. Visitors often form their first impressions long before stepping inside a business. Well-maintained historic buildings create an atmosphere that encourages people to park, walk, browse local shops, dine at restaurants, and spend more time downtown. Those longer visits translate into greater economic activity for small businesses while reinforcing Clarksville’s reputation as a destination in Southern Virginia.

The façade improvement program represents just one piece of Clarksville’s ongoing downtown revitalization strategy. Through creative events, business support initiatives, placemaking efforts, and continued investment in its historic commercial district, the community continues to build on its strengths while preserving the authentic character that makes Clarksville such a special place to live, work, and visit.
