Richmond’s Broad Street Corridor Joins Exploring Main Street

Virginia Main Street is excited to welcome the City of Richmond’s Broad Street Corridor as the newest community to join our Exploring Main Street program!

Stretching from 14th Street to Belvidere Street, the corridor brings plenty of strengths to build upon—and Richmond isn’t starting from scratch. In recent years, the City and its partners have invested in improved lighting, public art and placemaking, landscaping, small business and gallery support, storefront activation, and stronger relationships with business owners, property owners, and community stakeholders.

Exploring Main Street gives Richmond an opportunity to take stock of what’s already working along Broad Street, listen to the people who know the corridor best, and build on those strengths as the community looks toward the future.

The City plans to use the Main Street Approach as a framework for continued revitalization—bringing together training, tools, community engagement, and a network of peers to inform its next steps. Richmond also sees Broad Street as a pilot, with the opportunity to learn from the corridor’s experience and apply successful practices to other commercial corridors across the city.

As an Exploring Main Street community, Richmond will have access to Virginia Main Street training, resources, technical assistance, and connections to communities across the Commonwealth working toward stronger commercial districts.

We look forward to seeing what Richmond discovers as it builds upon Broad Street’s existing assets, strengthens local partnerships, and turns community ideas into new possibilities.

Could Exploring Main Street be right for your community? The program is designed for communities beginning to explore downtown or commercial district revitalization, preparing for future designation, or looking to put Main Street principles to work locally. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
