Building a Stronger Brand: Farmville Downtown Partnership Invests in Strategic Communications

Every downtown has a unique story to tell, but effectively communicating that story requires more than a recognizable logo or an active social media presence. A strong brand helps Main Street organizations connect with their communities, promote local businesses, and demonstrate the impact of their revitalization efforts.

Recognizing this opportunity, Farmville Downtown Partnership (FDP) received a $5,000 Virginia Main Street Technical Assistance Grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to develop a comprehensive Branding & Messaging Guide. Working with Letterpress Communications, a boutique, woman-owned public relations and marketing agency, FDP sought to strengthen its organizational identity, create consistency across its communications, and establish a strategic approach to promoting Downtown Farmville.

More Than Just a Logo

The resulting guide provides FDP with a foundation for how it communicates its mission, engages stakeholders, and tells Downtown Farmville’s story. Key components include:

  • Brand Identity: Established standards for logos, colors, typography, photography, and marketing materials to ensure a consistent and recognizable visual presence.
  • Messaging & Storytelling: Five core brand pillars (Community, Fun, Support, Heritage, and Future) that guide how FDP highlights the people, places, and experiences that make downtown unique.
  • Target Audiences: Audience profiles informed by visitor data and stakeholder feedback to help FDP better engage residents, businesses, students, visitors, and community partners.
  • Communications Strategy: Recommendations for social media, newsletters, business spotlights, community engagement, and organizational storytelling.
  • Implementation Roadmap: Actionable priorities, timelines, and performance measures to help FDP put its strategy into practice.

Importantly, the guide connects communications directly to the Main Street Four-Point Approach, demonstrating how intentional storytelling can support Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.

Lessons for Main Street Programs

One of the most valuable takeaways from Farmville’s project is that effective branding extends well beyond marketing downtown events and attractions. It also involves communicating the work of the Main Street organization itself.

From supporting small businesses and encouraging investment to coordinating improvements and engaging volunteers, Main Street programs accomplish work that often goes unnoticed. A clear communications strategy helps organizations share those successes, demonstrate their value, and build stronger relationships with stakeholders.

The guide also emphasizes the importance of understanding different audiences, maintaining consistent messaging, and prioritizing quality over quantity when planning events and communications. For organizations with limited staff capacity and resources, having an established framework can make these efforts more manageable and effective.

Thinking about strengthening your Main Street organization’s brand and messaging? Start by asking yourself a few important questions:

  • Does our organization have a clear, recognizable identity that reflects our downtown and our mission?
  • Are we communicating the full scope of our work, or primarily promoting events and activities?
  • Do our board members, volunteers, and partners understand and consistently communicate our organization’s value?
  • Are we reaching the audiences most important to our success?
  • Do we have a practical strategy for telling our story and measuring the impact of our communications?

Ultimately, a strong Main Street brand isn’t just about how a downtown looks. It’s about how an organization tells its story, communicates its value, and inspires people to become part of its future.
