Retail Matters 2026: Big Trends, Local Opportunities

There’s always something special about gathering with people who share a passion for vibrant downtowns and thriving local businesses!

On September 24, the Virginia Main Street (VMS) team enjoyed reconnecting with colleagues, making new connections, and learning about Virginia’s evolving retail landscape at the Retail Matters 2026 luncheon, hosted by Retail Alliance in Hampton.

The event featured insights from our longtime partner, Main Street America’s Matt Wagner, along with conversations about emerging technologies, consumer behavior, and the future of retail.

And the research offered plenty of food for thought for our Main Street communities!

Retail is a big deal in Virginia. In 2023, retail and food-and-beverage businesses generated $185.5 billion in revenue and supported nearly 750,000 jobs statewide. That’s a powerful reminder of the role our downtown businesses play in local economic vitality.

Value means more than a price tag. National consumer research cited in the report found that 81% of consumers prioritize value and affordability. For independent retailers, personalized service, thoughtfully curated merchandise, and memorable experiences offer opportunities to stand apart.

Our small businesses need continued support. Virginia’s specialty retail sector, including gift shops, florists, and antique stores, experienced a 19% inflation-adjusted decline in taxable sales between the third quarters of 2024 and 2025. It’s a reminder of why business retention, entrepreneurial support, and strong downtown partnerships matter.

While the retail landscape continues to change, our Main Street communities have something special: local character, authentic experiences, and relationships that larger retailers can’t easily replicate.

A special thank-you to Retail Alliance President & CEO Jenny Crittenden, former Executive Director of Gloucester’s Main Street program, Main Street Preservation Trust. It’s always a pleasure reconnecting with Jenny, whose Main Street roots make these gatherings even more meaningful. We’re grateful to Jenny, Retail Alliance, Main Street America, and their partners for bringing us together and sharing valuable insights.
