Harrisonburg Downtown 2040: Engaging Master Planning through Community Input

Partnering together, the City of Harrisonburg and Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance (HDR) have launched Harrisonburg Downtown 2040, a community-driven plan for Downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia. Throughout 2021, the planning process will unfold, and it will be completed during the fall. As the project gains momentum, members of the community have been invited to envision the next 20 years in Downtown Harrisonburg’s evolution.

There are three ways for people to contribute and share their thoughts, ideas, hopes, and concerns about the future of Downtown Harrisonburg in either English or Spanish:

  • An online, interactive Collaborative Map that asks participants to locate special places and place-specific ideas or issues / concerns in and around Downtown Harrisonburg. Participants can visit the map, drop a pin and then add a description or explanation (see image below).
  • During Downtown Restaurant Month, Downtown 2040 take-out menus will be available at all downtown restaurants and breweries with short surveys, asking customers to “place your order” for Downtown Harrisonburg. Also, these menus can be filled out by hand or online, making it easier to collect feedback (see image below).
  • Collectible coasters will be available in downtown restaurants and breweries, allowing participants to write their wishes for Downtown Harrisonburg on a coaster, then snap a photo and share it on Instagram using the hashtag #DreamDowntownHVA. Once the picture has been posted, the coaster will be theirs to keep (see image below).

Stay tuned for updates via social media as the planning process continues and more involvement opportunities arise!
